How it Works

“What are my options?”

The Altum Institute at the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City has an agreement with Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Newman accredits classes taken at the institute on an undergraduate level to allow the faithful in Oklahoma City pursue a degree in Catholic Theology. There are a couple of options on how this works and in short it depends what your academic background is as to what route is most beneficial to you.

The most common route is for someone, having already completed a bachelor’s degree, has a desire to pursue a second degree for a Bachelor’s of Arts in Theology.  This route will have him/her take 10 Newman University Theology courses in person or via Zoom through the Altum Institute, following a degree plan and graduating after achieving credit for all the courses on the degree plan. This allows for the general education classes to be pulled from his/her previous undergraduate degree and applied to the Theology degree for an expedited process.

We are also pleased to offer a second route, which is intended for those with some or no college credit. In this way, the Altum Institute will work will Newman University to create an individual plan according to the needs of the student such that they may take their general education classwork either at Newman University Online or through a local community college, while the bulk of the upper-division credits will be offered through the Altum Institute. This path results in a slightly different degree due to the nature of accreditation and collaboration between the Altum Institute and Newman University. Gr

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have an undergraduate degree already to enter this program?

In the past, it has been necessary to have an undergraduate degree to enter this program. Now, there are two options. If you have an undergraduate degree when you enter, you can pursue a Bachelor’s in Theology from Newman University immediately by completing the degree plan and requirements to graduate.

However, if you have not completed an undergraduate degree already, there is an option to work with the Altum Institute and Newman University to develop a plan for you to take all non-theological courses through Newman University online or another college as transfer work, while taking the Theology classes in-person or remote at the Altum Institute for a Bachelor’s of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on Theology. This would also allow you to choose another emphasis.

Reach out to Xander Schmitt (aschmitt@archokc.org) for more information.
