Mariology
Altum Institute
This course will encompass a theological synthesis concerning the person and role of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ, as contained in Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and as authoritatively articulated by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Meriting particular accentuation will be the four existing Marian dogmas; the fifth Marian doctrine of Our Lady’s Spiritual Motherhood; examples of contemporary Marian theology; the principle expressions of Marian devotion; the Church’s official perspective on Marian Private Revelation, and a historic synthesis of Church approved Marian apparitions.

Mariology
The academic objectives for this course are outlined according to the three intellectual virtues:
Knowledge of the four Marian dogmas of the Church, the fifth Marian doctrine of Our Lady co-redemptrix, and how the Catholic Church historically and currently has articulated and promoted the Blessed Mother’s role in Scripture, Tradition, and devotion.
Understanding how the Church’s teachings on the Blessed Mother connect to authoritative, inspired sources; the Blessed Mother’s necessary role in Salvation History; and her continued work in the lives of her spiritual children.
Application of the above material into academic and social contexts through papers and short summaries, respectively.
The spiritual objectives for this course are outlined according to moral virtues:
Justice in rendering Our Lady the hyperdulia (highest praise) that is owed her.
Piety in appreciating the Blessed Virgin’s role as our Spiritual Mother.
